Garry oak

The Garry oaks (Quercus garryana) are always the last trees to leaf out; this photo was taken on May 7. These are tall specimens, because here at the northern limit of their range they must compete with the evergreens. Further south, they are almost always seen on open, rocky knolls, and present a more gnarled appearance.
